Scheme highlighting initiating and molecular mediators of cellular senescence. The senescent phenotype includes expression of SA-β-galactosidase (SA-β-gal), increased
expression of p16INK4a leading to cell cycle arrest and an increase in the secretion
of pro-inflammatory factors termed as senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP).
Senescent cells have been observed in normal ageing cells and in cells/tissues of
various age-related pathologies.
