About Genome Integrity


What is Genome Integrity?

Genome Integrity is an open access journal that publishes research on all aspects of genome integrity, the cellular processes underlying maintenance of genome stability, and the effects of instability.

The processes that regulate genome integrity maintenance include sensing, signalling and repair of DNA damage, processing of DNA damage in the context of chromatin and chromosomes, cell cycle checkpoint control and control of apoptosis. Effective maintenance of genome integrity is essential for normal cell division, tissue homeostasis, healthy organismal ageing and prevention of diseases such as cancer. A number of model systems including single cell organisms and various higher plant and animal species, as well as studies of human cells/tissues or patients are required to understand how genome integrity maintenance affects ageing and development of cancer.

The journal is focused on understanding the processes that regulate the maintenance of genome integrity. Topics include, but are not limited to:

  • induction of DNA damage
  • sensing, signalling and repair of DNA damage
  • processing of DNA damage in the context of chromatin and interphase chromosomes
  • metaphase chromosome alterations
  • telomere maintenance
  • cell cycle regulation
  • control of apoptosis
  • effects of genotoxic stress including radiation and chemicals
  • genome integrity and ageing
  • genome integrity and cancer

Content overview

Genome Integrity considers the following types of articles:

  • Research: reports of data from original research.
  • Short reports: brief reports of data from original research.
  • Reviews: comprehensive, authoritative, descriptions of any subject within the scope of Genome Integrity. Reviews can cover any topical themes such as basic science and clinical reviews, ethics, pro/con debates, equipment reviews and thematic series to highlight specific topics in the field. They are often written by experts in the field, invited by the Editorial Board.
  • Commentaries: short, focused and opinionated articles on any subject within the scope of Genome Integrity. These articles are usually related to a contemporary issue, such as recent research findings, and may be commissioned from opinion leaders in the field.

Peer review policies

After being screened for suitability, manuscripts submitted to Genome Integrity will be reviewed by two experts selected by the Editors, with the aim of reaching a decision as soon as possible. Reviewers will be required to declare any competing interests and will be asked to submit their reports within two weeks. Overall the Editors of Genome Integrity aim to reach a decision on a manuscript within six weeks.

After receipt of the recommendation from the reviewers, the Editors-in-Chief will decide whether to accept (outright or subject to revisions) or reject manuscripts. The authors are then given three months with which to revise their manuscript.

Edited by Razqallah Hakem, M Prakash Hande, John Petrini and Predrag Slijepcevic, Genome Integrity is supported by an expert Editorial Board.

Publishing in Genome Integrity

All articles are listed in PubMed immediately upon acceptance (after peer review), and are covered by PubMed Central.

Articles in Genome Integrity should be cited in the same way as articles in a traditional journal. However, because articles in this journal are not printed, they do not have page numbers. Instead, they have a unique article number.

The following citation:

Genome Integ 2004, 2:1

refers to article 1 from volume 2 of the journal.

As an online journal, Genome Integrity does not have issue numbers. Each volume corresponds to a calendar year.

Submission of manuscripts

General journal policies

Genome Integrity is published by BioMed Central, part of Springer Science+Business Media. BioMed Central is committed to ensuring peer-reviewed biomedical research is open access. That means it is freely and universally accessible online, it is archived in at least one internationally recognised free access repository, and its authors retain copyright, allowing anyone to reproduce or disseminate articles, according to the BioMed Central copyright and licence agreement. Genome Integrity however, has taken this further by making all its content open access.

Genome Integrity's articles are archived in PubMed Central, the US National Library of Medicine's full-text repository of life science literature, and also at INIST in France and in e-Depot, the National Library of the Netherlands' digital archive of all electronic publications. The journal is also participating in the British Library's e-journals pilot project, and plans to deposit copies of all articles with the British Library.

Genome Integrity is able to deliver summaries of frequently updated content via Really Simple Syndication (RSS) feeds.
